04/05/2009
Over the course of the 2008/09 season I played for the Derby Army in division 3 of the Thanet Sunday Football League. We ended mid-table and finished on a high with a 6-1 win followed by a 5-0 win. But these results came too late as the decision to create a new and exciting team for the 2009/10 season had already been made.
It was clear throughout the season that as far as management was concerned, no one was really willing to give there all and put in maximum effort. Several players realised this before the season had even started and left for other teams!
I saw the season out and after our final game, started to build AFC Thanet.
My vision for the team is simple, to be the finest team we can possibly be.
What does that mean? Well I want my team to have the best equipment, the best kit, and the best support of any Sunday League side. Within one week, we had already devised a rough plan of purchases, including a home and away Nike kit, 10 training balls, 2 match balls, polo shirts, training / sub jackets, personal kit bags and all mannor of training equipment.
We have also devised a pre-season training program, built the website for the team, designed the team logo and had interest from at least 18 players.
This stuff does not come cheap as you can imagine, but Jonathan Deslandes, a good friend of mine, has helped me with the setup of the team, the finances and in finding players! He will be the Assistant Manager for the season and has some great ideas.
So, that's about it for now, let's hope the enthusiasm lasts for the season!
